Record: Built From Scratch by X-Ecutioners
Explanation: The X-ecutioners, consisting of DJs Rob Swift, Mista Sinista, Total Eclipse, and the late great Roc Raida, were one of the greatest turntablism crews ever. Though they were known for dominating the battle scene, even against legends like the ISP, they are now better known for their studio work. “Built From Scratch” was one of the first albums of its kind where the DJs were the main act and MCs were the features. As you can see from the circle crease and the frayed edges, this one has been in my crate for a long time and definitely seen a lot of love!

Record: The Message at the Depth by DJ Krush
Explanation: DJ Krush’s Message at the Depth, released in 2002 featured many artists I was deeply studying at the time, but more importantly featured Japanese rapper Inden, who I had never heard before. His track was an eye-opening moment for me, in that the raps were “foreign” to me, but the track just bumped so hard. This track began an ongoing pursuit of listening to hip-hop from all over the globe and the realization that lyricism and flow were international and ultimately introduced me to music in French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and more. Hip-hop is a global art form and I am thankful to have discovered so much talent from around the world.

Take a portable turntable, slap a fader on it and pick up a 7” scratch record like one of these and you’re good to cut anywhere! Some of my personal faves are from Thud Rumble, Stokyo and Scratch Poop ( I know, right?!)They’re usually skipless and come in some dope colors to boot!

One of my fav's is the dueling saxophone and violin solos on "Forgot about Dre". Originally from A-Dog's collection, it's been in my hands for about 10 years now, fooling old folks at weddings into dancing to Lil' Kim and slowing the mood down at the club.” - DJ Kanga

Explanation: DJ Excess is one of the most technical turntablists out there, but you may not realize it from these tracks. Instead, Excess composes some super chill, melodic beats all from scratching instrument samples. It might not even sound like scratching to the untrained ear, but with a close listen you can hear all the complexities of his cuts interwoven into these mellow tunes.

Record: Phantazmagorea by D-Styles
Explanation: “This record, personally, changed my whole perception of what Djing and Turntablism could be. Put together entirely with wax, turntables, old mixers and an echo effect. No digital dj mediums, insert your favorite here. It's totally weird, horror kind of stuff and not what I would've expected from, in my opinion, the most technical member of the Invsbl Skrtch Piklz, D-Styles. But, if you can get down with the horror vibe, it is super impressive not only in raw scratching skill but also in song composition and album flow.” - DJ Kanganade

Record: RE:FIX (A Tribute to DJ A_Dog) by Fattie B and members of Burlington's Music Community
Explanation: “When we lost DJ Andy Williams on December 26th, 2013, it was a blow to our entire community. For us who knew him and loved him, we will miss him forever - but consider ourselves lucky to have been touched by his love for life and music. He left us so many gifts that we will listen to and enjoy forever. One of Andy's great joys was creating mashups. Him and I spent hours chatting about which vocals would sound dopest on which beats. As a tribute to him (and his love of remixes and mashes), I have reached out to some of the state's best DJs and producers and asked them to submit their own mashups as a tribute to Andy
{and as a Christmas gift to all of you}. Sending you Christmas cheer in heaven Wizzle! I miss you and your goofy giggle.” - Fattie B

February 28, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: BVFFALO by Svpply.
Favorite Track: GVTS.
Released by Self-Released in 2015.
Why I Selected This Record: “My favorite project I've ever worked on. I made this album entirely with vinyl samples usually using 4-5 different sources per song. ” -Svpply.
February 27, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Kala by MIA.
Favorite Track: Paper Planes.
Released by XL Recordings in 2007.
Why I Selected This Record: “On one side of this album is the Clash sampling "Paper Planes" and on the other is the Timbaland-esque bouncy "Boyz". Wherever it goes though this album is so uniquely M.I.A. and unlike anything else that has crossed over into the pop sphere in the US. ” -Svpply.
February 26, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Oracular Spectacular by MGMT.
Favorite Track: Time to Pretend.
Released by RED Ink in 2007 and physically on by Columbia Records in 2008.
Why I Selected This Record: “This album is so fun to listen to. Weirdo psychadelic synth pop at its best put together with the help of the Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann (another band that should have probably made my list). ” -Svpply.
February 25, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Brown Sugar by D'Angelo.
Favorite Track: Cruisin'.
Released by EMI Music in 1995.
Why I Selected This Record: “This just might be the sexiest album of all time. It was another hallmark R&B album that kicked off the “neo-soul” movement of evolving the style’s sound while recognizing and paying tribute to it’s roots in 70s soul.” -Svpply.
February 24, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: College Dropout by Kanye West.
Favorite Track: Slow Jamz.
Released by Roc-A-Fella Records and Def Jam Recordings in 2004.
Why I Selected This Record: “I’m pretty much a fan of any era of Kanye but I think we all know this was his prime. The smoothest sped up soul samples and thoughtful lyrics. Whats not to love?” -Svpply.
February 23, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Malibu by Anderson .Paak.
Favorite Track: The Waters feat BJ The Chicago Kid.
Released by Steel Wool, OBE, Art Club and Empire Distribution in 2016.
Why I Selected This Record: “Anderson .Paak is just so cool and his style comes through perfectly on this album. He has an immediately recognizable voice and seems pretty able to adapt to any different style, sounding equally buttery over the smooth soulful instrumental of Heart Don’t Stand a Chance as he does on the Kaytranada-esque, Pomo produced Am I Wrong.” -Svpply.
February 22, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Supreme Clientele by Ghostface Killah.
Favorite Track: One.
Released by Epic Records in 2000.
Why I Selected This Record: “This is my favorite album by a solo Wu-Tang member. Ghostface is a damn poet and he puts it all on display on this album over soul-sampled production.” -Svpply.
February 21, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: ANTI by Rihanna.
Favorite Track: James Joint.
Released by Westbury Road and Roc Nation in 2016.
Why I Selected This Record: “Rihanna defies expectations for pop artists by getting better and better as her career goes on. Working with @susan_saranwrap on an all-Rihanna night at Sidebar only deepened my appreciation for her music. We managed to play just her songs all night and keep the energy up the whole time. Theres only a couple artists that have a catalogue of music you could do that with.” -Svpply.
February 20, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Anthology by Knxwledge.
Favorite Track: OpinyunGayme.
Released by Stones Throw Records & Leaving Records in 2013.
Why I Selected This Record: “If you’ve heard Knxwledge it was most likely on the track Momma off Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly”. He recently came to the limelight with that feature and a collaborative album with Anderson .Paak but before all that he was busting out 10 track albums on his band camp every other week full of the wonkiest hip hop instrumentals and remixes out there. This album was a huge inspiration on my own beats and if you listen to anything on my soundcloud even now you can hear the influence right away.” -Svpply.
February 19, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Man On The Moon by Kid Cudi.
Favorite Track: Soundtrack 2 My Life.
Released by Dream On, GOOD Music and Universal Motown Records in 2009.
Why I Selected This Record: “This is one of my all-time favorites. A spacey, alternative hip hop album with production by Ratatat, MGMT and Kanye is the perfect crossover for fans of late 2000s indie-pop and hip hop. His lyric writing was at its best on this album too.” -Svpply.
February 18, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Manners by Passion Pit.
Favorite Track: Sleepyhead.
Released by Frenchkiss Records and Columbia Records in 2009.
Why I Selected This Record: “Okay I’m hopping off the hip-hop train for a second. The danceable rock wave around 2010 provided some of my favorite albums from artists like Pheonix, Animal Collective and LCD Soundsystem but Manners was my favorite. It was the soundtrack to me walking into American Apparel to get one of those plain colored zip up hoodies with the white pull ties. I will never understand why this style didn’t last.” -Svpply.
February 17, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: TNGHT EP by TNGHT.
Favorite Goooo.
Released by Warp and LuckyMe in 2012.
Why I Selected This Record: “This album hit the trap and hip hop world like a truck. I was watching the Redbull 3style competition in Poland last week and heard “Higher Ground” twice, reminding me that this album continues to be relevant and influence DJs in 2018. As a Hudson Mohawke fan, I checked this album out as soon as it dropped and I couldn’t get enough. It was also my introduction to Lunice, who’s stage presence as a DJ still influences me to this day and encourages me to jump around stage like a lunatic no matter how I’m feeling.” -Svpply.
February 16, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: EARL by Earl Sweatshirt.
Favorite Track: Couch.
Released as a free digital download by Odd Future in 2010.
Why I Selected This Record: “Disclaimer that I can’t support the lyrical content of this album but I also can’t deny the influence it had on me. Odd Future was the Wu Tang of my generation and this album made Earl the Method Man and Ghostface at the same time.” -Svpply.
February 15, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Take Care by Drake.
Favorite Track: Lord Knows feat. Rick Ross.
Released by Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records and Republic Records in 2011.
Why I Selected This Record: “Drake is so Drake on this album. He’s shown that he can successfully maneuver any genre he puts his mind to but this is clearly his comfort zone. This is the dude that gave guys an album they could feel sad to alone in their room.. until the next track comes in and reminds them they might be too strung out on compliments, overdosed on confidence.” -Svpply.
February 14, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Blackout! by Method Man & Redman.
Favorite Track: Da Rockwilder.
Released by Def Jam in 1999.
Why I Selected This Record: “Flashback to high school after classes doing mischievous things in friends cars (sorry mom…). This album was the soundtrack. Shoutout to my man @sevanbedal for putting me on this one.” -Svpply.
February 13, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Slime Season 3 by Young Thug.
Favorite Track: TWith That.
Released by 300 Entertainment and Atlantic Records in 2016.
Why I Selected This Record: “I think Young Thug belongs in any conversation about a top 5 list of living rappers. Slime Season 3 is short and to the point so it doesn’t really have any low moments. This album has one of his best tracks to date (‘Digits’) as well as hints at the country album to come on ‘Worth It’. His weirdness is the best thing about him and is the reason for the best moments on this album.” -Svpply.
February 12, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Back to Black by Amy Winehouse.
Favorite Track: Tears Dry On Their Own.
Released by Island Records in 2006.
Why I Selected This Record: “The defining moment on this album for me is when Winehouse sings “What kind of fuckery is this, you made me miss the Slick Rick gig” over a jazzy swing instrumental that Otis Redding would have felt comfortable on.” -Svpply.
February 11, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Acid Rap by Chance the Rapper.
Favorite Track: Lost feat. Noname Gypsy.
Released as a free digital download in 2013.
Why I Selected This Record: “A no-brainer choice and an album that defined a certain period in the lives of myself and many others I know. Chance masterfully combines different eras of Chicago music—from Soul to House to Hip Hop to Juke—to create an upbeat, jammer of an album that you can return to over and over.” -Svpply.
February 10, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: The Warm Up by J Cole.
Favorite Track: Ladies feat Lee Fields and the Expressions.
Released by Roc Nation and Dreamville in 2009.
Why I Selected This Record: “Before he let Nas down and before he signed to his childhood idol Jay-Z, J. Cole was providing the soundtrack to my High School Art classes. We already know Cole has bars but his beat selection was what got me on this one. He picks samples and beats that feel nostalgic and familiar even when it takes you a minute to figure out the source. The star potential on here is clear.” -Svpply.
February 9, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Channel Orange by Frank Ocean.
Favorite Track: Sweet Life.
Released by Def Jam in 2012.
Why I Selected This Record: “Frank Ocean had a crazy 2017 putting at least two tracks in my top 10 for the year. Before Chanel though we had Channel, comfortable but a little out of place in the post-OFWG hip-hop landscape. As far as I can tell, this album—along with The Weeknd’s House of Balloons—gave life and mystery back to modern R&B.” -Svpply.
February 8, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: 4 by Beyoncé.
Favorite Track: Love on Top.
Released by Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records in 2011.
Why I Selected This Record: “My girlfriend recently told me she thought this was a flawless album so I had to check it out again and I don’t disagree. Beyoncé gets put in a box sometimes but this album has bangers, mid-tempo grooves and slow-building ballads that are all carried out with precision and style. The co-production from The-Dream adds some of my favorite moments in the second half. This one is a classic.” -Svpply.
February 7, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: The Carter III by Lil Wayne.
Favorite Track: Mrs. Officer.
Released by Cash Money and Universal Motown in 2008.
Why I Selected This Record: “I might take some heat for this one but I had to narrow it down to one lil wayne album! This one was the first of his that I memorized from start to end. I used to mow lawns to 3peat in high school. Plus I’ve never dropped A Milli in the club without the crowd going absolutely nuts.” -Svpply.
February 6, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Diamond Life by Sade.
Favorite Track: Your Love is King.
Released by Epic Records in 1984.
Why I Selected This Record: “One of my first albums on vinyl (I just stole it from my parents collection really..), this one is right for any time or place. If you’re not already in love with Sade go watch her live performance of Your Love is King in San Diego.” -Svpply.
February 5, 2018
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Good Kid M.A.A.D City by Kendrick Lamar.
Favorite Track: Money Trees feat. Jay Rock.
Released by Top Dawg Entertainment and Aftermath Entertainment in 2012.
Explanation:: “In my opinion, this is Kendrick’s best album. It is packed with banger after banger and still manages to have a compelling and coherent story behind it.” -Svpply.
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Baduizm by Erykah Badu.
Favorite Track: On & On.
Released by Kedar Entertainment in 1997.
Why I Selected This Record: “My desert island music video (if I had to pick just one for the rest of my life) is Erykah Badu and Andre 3000 in “Otherside of the Game”, telling the story of the girlfriend/wife of a drug dealer and the internal struggle that brings. The entire album is a buttery melodic masterpiece of neo-soul/R&B that will always live at the end of my DJ sets..” -Svpply.
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Donuts by J Dilla.
Favorite Track: Mash.
Released by Stones Throw Records in 2006.
Why I Selected This Record: “This was the album that made me want to make music. Dilla masterfully reworks forgotten soul gems, chopping and slicing segments from all over each track to form entirely new compositions. It is an album that changed the way hip hop sounds forever. Tonight at Sidebar (9:30-2) we are celebrating his life and work with beat sets and performances from local artists inspired by this gifted producer..” -Svpply.
February 2, 2018.
Selector: DJ Svpply.
Record: Off The Wall by Michael Jackson.
Favorite Track: Rock with You.
Released by Epic Records and CBS Records in 1979.
Why I Selected This Record: “Michael Jackson teamed up with Quincy Jones for his first truly independent solo project and the result was this timeless disco/pop/soul classic. Just try to not dance to this album.” -Svpply.
February 1, 2018.
Selector: Svpply.
Record: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill.
Favorite Track: Nothing Even Matters feat. D’Angelo.
Released by Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records in 1998.
A Message From The Selector: "The first and only solo album Lauryn Hill ever released fuses Hip-Hop, Reggae, R&B and Neo-Soul seamlessly into a beautiful patchwork about love, loss and change. Miseducation was also the first Hip-Hop album ever to win a Grammy for Album of the Year, a benchmark for women and Hip-Hop in the music industry" says Svpply.
